As kids grow, they are more aware of their prominent ears. Frequently, this is a source of mockery and shame along the life of a person, mostly during childhood. Generally, man and women with prominent use more long hair styles to cover them source of so much shame. The ear is prominent and most frequently lacks from a normal structure of support for cartilage with the right helix. . The auriculocephalic angle (the angle formed by the outer ear and the cranium) generally is a turned aside angle, with great width and prominent. Anyway, with the surgery is possible to recreate the anatomic reference and stretch the auriculocephalic angle, reestablishing the ear position to the back, closer to the head. The final result is an aesthetically more attractive form, with a lower profile, from the head. Patients included are from kids to grownups, In the case of kids, the cartilage has is not matured at all and therefore is more flexible and easy to work with. In most kids this procedure is made when they are six years old. At this age, they are ready to enter their first year at school, and also is the time needed for the auricle (outer ear) to get to he’s grownup size. Every case has to be considered individually, having in mind all the social and familiar factors.
PROCEDURE
An Otoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure is made in extern patient conditions, allowing the patient to return to he’s house later on. We have found that generally our patients prefer general anesthesia. There are several techniques to make an Otoplasty. In a particular case, a minor incision is made in the rear fold of the ear. A little piece of skin is removed sometimes. Then the cartilage is molded, making sutures in strategic places to form the necessary folds; then more sutures are placed from the auricle to the cranium, just right behind the ear. These sutures are the ones responsible of moving the ear all the way to the back to make it closer to the head. A bandage that compresses the head is applied, and the patient is taken to the healing room..
POST-OPERATORY HEALING
You’ll be allowed to return to your home after the surgery. Once home, you have to lay down in your bed with your head raised. You’ll experience a feeling of stretchiness’ and inconvenience during the first 24-48 hours. Also you’ll swell up and bruises will appear, and it will come to his maximum in the 48-72 post-surgery hours. This is normal.
Your bandaging will stay in place for the first 5–7 days. After removing the bandages, your ear will look swelled and bruised. This is normal and it will be lowering during the first 4 weeks after the surgery.
Generally, a small moderated pain is experimented after an Otoplasty. Patients sometimes complaint about a small headache. You’ll be provided with pain medicine. We are useful to suggest you, to acquire all your post-surgery medicines before having the surgery. You should not control the ingestion of your own medicines; you’ll have to ask someone else to do it to avoid auto-medication.
Once you get home, we suggest you to rest. You’ll be asked to come back to the office the next day for a routine checkup. Most of the patients need from 7-14 days of healing before going back to school or work. You’ll be able to drive 4 days after the surgery. But remember that you’ll still have the bandages. You can restart your exercise routine after 4 weeks. Always consult us first. Home routines can be made after the first post-surgery week. Every patient is unique and for that it will heal up in different ways. Even if, you feel wonderful, you should not exceed yourself.
COMPLICATIONS OF AN OTOPLASTY
If is not frequent that complications are present, and percentages
in this case’s vary, you have to be conscious that the following complications may occur.
KELOID SCARS / HYPERTROPHYC, SENSORIAL NERVIOUS DISFUNCTION, HEMATOMAS, CONTOUR IRREGULARITIES, HYPO OR HYPER PIGMENTED SCARS, DISTORTION, INFECTION, LOOSENESS OF FIBRE, THE FOLD OF THE CARTILAGE OF THE EAR VISIBLY FOLDED, REMOTE POSOBILITY OF RECURRENCE FROM THE EAR PROMINENCE.
Some of these complications, from being seriously enough, can prolong the healing process, can require corrective surgery which would have an additional cost and can involve other certain specialists in the medic field. You have to know that smokers, diabetic people and also people with overweight have a higher level of incidence for complications comparing to those that are non-smokers, not diabetic and with no overweight. You should also take note that those patients that have combined procedures (For example, Otoplasty and rhinoplasty) also they would have a higher level of complication from those who only submit themselves to just one procedure.
WHAT CAN YOU AND CANNOT EXPECT
It is considered that these procedures are to improve the look from a person; they should not be taken as ways to completely change the facial factions or features.
We have found that the patient expectative is one of the key factors to be satisfied. No warranty is given, not implied and not for papers, in relation to how it would look after the procedure. Your surgeon will do everything that can do to satisfy your requirements, within what is considerable and reasonable. The final goal in this surgical procedure is to make your ears look better and less prominent. We beg you to take note that every person is unique and everybody needs a different focus. The doctor Perez-Gurri can suggest you; in base of he’s professional experience, the type of procedures more appropriate to achieve your aesthetic needs. Remember that there are lots of things to consider, but a limiting factor is the skin elasticity, the bone and cartilage structure and the availability of good fibers.
It seems to be an inverse relation between the expectative and the satisfaction from a patient. In other words, the more expectative the patient is, the level of satisfaction is less. The corporal image is a unique concept, and what the patient see’s is not necessarily what the surgeon see’s. Therefore is of great importance that you know very well you’re expectative for the procedure you’re going to submit you’re self, know the limitations of it, and fully discuss with your doctor any doubt or worry that you could have in relation to the procedure. Feel entirely free to make any questions; we have all the time necessary to answer all of your questions, personally or with our literature and videos. We beg you to have very present that the results obtained by the Otoplasty could not be permanent. Gravity keeps taking an effect on your fibers, and the loose of strength and tension of cartilages continues with he’s course. The cartilage is unique in the way that seems have “memory” of its own; we mean that it “remembers” the actual position that it had during many years and has the tendency to gravitate to what he considers he’s “normal” position.
OTHER QUESTIONS
Does smoking have any effect at all?
Yes. Many studies have shown that smoking has adverse effects on the fibers, and many times it slows the healing process. If you smoke, we ask you to stop smoking during a period of 2-3 weeks.
